Independent funeral directors in Bath
When someone dies, you shouldn't have to know what to do next.
We are a family-run funeral home. We answer the phone ourselves, day or night, and we will guide you through every decision at whatever pace is right for you.

Where to start
If someone has just died
Call us, at any hour.
Someone from our family answers every call. We will come to you, whether at home, in hospital or in a care home.
Register the death.
This needs to happen within five days. We will explain exactly what to bring and where to go.
Take your time.
There is no rush to decide anything else. We can meet at our home, or at yours, when you are ready.

How we can help
Every funeral is different.
Some families know exactly what they want. Others have never been asked the question. Either is fine.
Burial and cremation
A traditional funeral, arranged entirely around your family — at a church, a crematorium chapel or a graveside.
Direct cremation
A simple cremation without a service, cared for quietly by us, with the ashes returned to you whenever you wish.
Woodland burial
Burial in a natural meadow or woodland ground near Bath, with a simple coffin and no headstone.
Celebrations of life
A gathering held later, in your own time and in a place that meant something — a hall, a garden, a pub.
Pre-paid funeral plans
Arranging and paying for your own funeral now, so that nobody has to guess what you would have wanted.

The family
Three generations, one front door.
Thomas Alder opened the door of 14 Widcombe Hill in 1962, having served the families of this city for years before that. He kept the book of every funeral he arranged, in pencil, and we keep it still.
Today his granddaughter Ruth and her husband Daniel look after the same house on Widcombe Hill. There is no call centre and no branch office. When you telephone, one of us answers — and the person you speak to first is the person who will be with you on the day.
